You do not have to wait for certainty

before you start living your life.

“You can make room for uncertainty without giving it control.”

Obsessive thinking can make ordinary moments feel urgent, dangerous, or impossible to trust.

You may find yourself checking, researching, confessing, asking for reassurance, mentally reviewing, avoiding, comparing, repeating, praying, or trying to feel “just right.”

These behaviors may bring temporary relief, but they often strengthen the cycle over time.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a specialized treatment for OCD that helps you gradually face feared thoughts, feelings, situations, sensations, or uncertainty while learning not to respond with compulsions or avoidance.

ERP is not about forcing yourself into your worst fear or proving that nothing bad will ever happen. It is about changing your relationship with uncertainty and helping your brain learn that anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and discomfort can be experienced without needing to neutralize, control, or escape them.

You might recognize yourself in:

  • Spending hours checking, researching, reviewing, or seeking reassurance

  • Avoiding people, places, objects, conversations, or responsibilities

  • Feeling responsible for preventing harm or making sure everything is perfect

  • Experiencing intrusive thoughts that feel disturbing, shameful, or unlike you

  • Mentally replaying events to determine whether you did something wrong

  • Needing to confess, apologize, or receive certainty from others

  • Repeating actions, phrases, prayers, or thoughts until they feel right

  • Worrying about contamination, illness, relationships, morality, sexuality, identity, or making mistakes

  • Feeling unable to make decisions without complete certainty

  • Confusing anxiety with danger or the presence of a thought with its meaning

  • Knowing that your fears may be unlikely but still feeling compelled to respond

  • Feeling exhausted by your attempts to prevent something bad from happening

In ERP, we work collaboratively to identify the OCD cycle and create a gradual treatment plan that fits your needs. You may practice approaching triggers while resisting compulsions, reducing reassurance-seeking, allowing intrusive thoughts to be present without analyzing them, or making room for uncertainty without trying to solve it.

The work is structured, intentional, and paced with care. You are not expected to do everything at once, and ERP is not about flooding you with your biggest fear. We begin where you are, build skills and trust, and gradually work toward the situations and experiences OCD has been limiting.

ERP may be especially supportive if you are:

  • Living with obsessive-compulsive disorder or suspected OCD

  • Caught in cycles of rumination, checking, reassurance-seeking, or avoidance

  • Struggling with “pure obsessional” OCD, also known as primarily mental compulsions

  • Experiencing relationship OCD, health anxiety, scrupulosity, contamination fears, harm OCD, or responsibility-based OCD

  • Dealing with perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty, or a need to feel certain

  • Tired of organizing your life around avoiding anxiety

  • Looking for a structured treatment that helps you practice change outside of sessions

  • Ready to reclaim time, freedom, relationships, and choices from OCD

At Kismet, ERP is part of an integrative and trauma-informed approach. We can use ERP to interrupt the OCD cycle while also paying attention to your nervous system, your body, your history, and the experiences that may have shaped your relationship with fear and uncertainty.

For some people, EMDR may be helpful when past experiences, trauma, or distressing memories are contributing to current symptoms. Somatic therapy can support you in noticing and tolerating the physical sensations that accompany anxiety. IFS can help you approach protective or fearful parts of yourself with curiosity rather than shame. Attachment-focused work can help us understand how relationships, responsibility, rejection, and safety show up in your OCD patterns.

The goal is not to eliminate every uncomfortable thought or feeling. That would give OCD another impossible assignment.

The goal is to help you stop organizing your life around the demand for certainty.

Together, we can practice making room for discomfort, choosing your values over compulsions, and responding to your life with more flexibility and freedom.

You are not your intrusive thoughts. You are not the story OCD is telling you.

You are a person learning that you can experience uncertainty without giving your entire life to it.

I am residing on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Osage Nation, the Illini Confederacy (including the Cahokia, Kaskaskia, Michigamea, Peoria, and Tamaroa peoples), and other Indigenous nations who have stewarded this land for generations. These lands—now known as St. Louis, Missouri—were home to complex societies long before European colonization, including the ancient Mississippian culture that built the nearby city of Cahokia, once one of the largest urban centers in North America.

These Indigenous communities lived, loved, and thrived along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, maintaining deep relationships with the land, water, and all living things. I honor the enduring presence, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples—past, present, and future—and commit to respecting their sovereignty and right to self-determination. Liberation for all. Land back.
